Tarentum

Also known as Taras

Tarentum, Greek Taras, was a Spartan colony founded around 706 BCE on the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy, on the site of modern Taranto. With a fine harbour and rich trade, it became the leading Greek city of the region, heading the Italiote League from the fourth century BCE. Its call for help from Pyrrhus of Epirus against Rome failed, and it fell to Rome in 272 BCE.
