Pier Luigi Farnese

1503–1547 · 16th century

Pier Luigi Farnese was the son of Pope Paul III, who created for him the Duchy of Castro in 1537 and the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza in 1545. His harsh rule over the Piacenza nobility made him enemies, and he was assassinated in 1547 in a conspiracy backed by the imperial governor of Milan. His descendants ruled Parma until 1731.
