Pocahontas was a daughter of Wahunsenacah, paramount chief of the Powhatan, in Virginia. Captured by the English in 1613, she converted to Christianity, took the name Rebecca and married John Rolfe in 1614, a match that brought a brief peace. She travelled to England in 1616 and died at Gravesend in 1617.
