Pokhran

Pokhran is a town in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, in western India, near which lies the Indian Army's test range. India carried out its first nuclear test there on 18 May 1974, code-named Smiling Buddha, and five further tests in May 1998, after which it declared itself a nuclear-weapon state; Pakistan answered with its own tests weeks later.
