Popular Front (Spain)
The Popular Front was an electoral coalition of Spanish left-wing parties, including Republicans, Socialists and Communists, formed in January 1936. It narrowly won the general election of February 1936, and Manuel Azaña became prime minister and then president of the Republic. Amid rising political violence, a military conspiracy against its government launched the coup of July 1936 that began the Spanish Civil War.
