Primo Popolo

1250–1260 · 13th century

The Primo Popolo was the first popular regime of Florence, established in 1250 when the guilds and the armed neighbourhood companies of the popolo took power under a Captain of the People alongside the commune's older institutions. It began the Palazzo del Popolo, now the Bargello, and in 1252 issued the gold florin. The regime ended after the Guelph defeat at Montaperti in 1260.
