Province of Posen

1848–1920 · 19th century

The Province of Posen was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia from 1848 to 1920, formed when the Grand Duchy of Posen lost its special status after the Polish rising of 1848. With its capital at Posen (Poznań) and a Polish majority, it was a focus of conflict between Germanisation policies and the Polish national movement. Most of it passed to Poland after the Greater Poland Uprising and the Treaty of Versailles.
