Punto Fijo Pact

1958 · 20th century

The Punto Fijo Pact was an agreement signed on 31 October 1958 by Venezuela's main democratic parties, Democratic Action, COPEI and the Democratic Republican Union, after the fall of the dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez. Named after the house of COPEI leader Rafael Caldera, it committed the parties to respect election results and share power. It underpinned four decades of civilian two-party rule until the rise of Hugo Chávez.
