Purificación (Uruguay)

1815–1818 · 19th century · Also known as Villa de la Purificación

Purificación was the settlement founded by José Gervasio Artigas in 1815 on a plateau above the Uruguay river at Hervidero, north of Paysandú. It served as his headquarters and the seat of the Federal League's government, where he directed the war against Buenos Aires and the Portuguese and held political prisoners. It was abandoned after the Portuguese invasion and is now an archaeological site.
