Pyrrho

c. 360–c. 270 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Pyrrho of Elis

Pyrrho of Elis was a Greek philosopher regarded as the founder of scepticism. He travelled with Alexander the Great's army as far as India, where he reportedly met ascetic sages. Teaching that the nature of things cannot be known, he recommended suspending judgement to reach tranquillity. He wrote nothing; his ideas survive through his pupil Timon and the later Pyrrhonist school.
