Qadi Abd al-Jabbar

c. 935–1025 · 10th century · Also known as Abd al-Jabbar ibn Ahmad

Qadi Abd al-Jabbar was a leading Mu'tazili theologian and jurist who served as chief judge at Ray under the Buyids, appointed through the vizier al-Sahib ibn Abbad. His vast work al-Mughni is the fullest surviving statement of Mu'tazili theology, covering God's unity and justice, human free will and prophecy. Much of it was rediscovered in Yemeni manuscripts in the twentieth century.
