Raden Patah

c. 1455–1518 · 15th century

Raden Patah was the founder and first sultan of Demak, the first Muslim sultanate of Java, in the late 15th century. Javanese tradition makes him a son of a Majapahit king and a Chinese mother. Supported by the Muslim saints known as the Wali Songo, he made Demak the leading power on Java's north coast as Majapahit declined.
