Hadiwijaya

d. 1582 · 16th century · Also known as Jaka Tingkir, Sultan of Pajang

Hadiwijaya, known in legend as Jaka Tingkir, was the founder and only significant ruler of the Pajang Sultanate in Central Java. A son-in-law of Sultan Trenggana of Demak, he defeated Arya Penangsang of Jipang with the help of Ratu Kalinyamat in the succession war after Trenggana's death, then moved the seat of power inland to Pajang. His vassal Ki Ageng Pemanahan founded Mataram, which soon overshadowed Pajang.
