Wali Songo

15th–16th centuries · 15th century · Also known as Wali Sanga

The Wali Songo, or 'nine saints', are the Muslim teachers revered in Javanese tradition for spreading Islam in Java in the 15th and 16th centuries. Among them were Sunan Ampel, Sunan Giri, Sunan Kalijaga and Sunan Gunung Jati; several founded religious schools or ruling houses, such as Giri and Cirebon, and they supported the Demak Sultanate. Their tombs on the north coast remain major pilgrimage sites.
