Rákóczi's War of Independence

1703–1711 · 18th century

Rákóczi's War of Independence was the Hungarian uprising of 1703–1711 against Habsburg rule, led by Prince Francis II Rákóczi. Rising from discontent with Habsburg absolutism, taxation and religious repression, the Kuruc rebels held much of Hungary for several years, but after defeat at Trencsén (1708) the war ended with the Peace of Szatmár (1711), which granted an amnesty while Rákóczi went into exile.
