Kuruc

1671–1711 · 17th century · Also known as Kurucs

Kuruc was the name given to the armed anti-Habsburg rebels of Royal Hungary between 1671 and 1711. Drawn from Protestant nobles, lesser gentry, haiduks and peasants, they fought against Habsburg absolutism and religious persecution, first under Imre Thököly and later in Francis II Rákóczi's War of Independence, which ended with the Peace of Szatmár.
