İzmit
İzmit is a city in north-western Turkey at the head of the Gulf of İzmit on the Sea of Marmara. As ancient Nicomedia it was capital of Bithynia and the eastern residence of Emperor Diocletian. Under the Ottomans it was a port and shipbuilding town, where the exiled Hungarian rebel Imre Thököly died in 1705. It is now an industrial centre.
