Nicomedia

Also known as İzmit

Nicomedia was an ancient city at the head of the Gulf of Izmit in north-western Anatolia, founded in 264 BCE by Nicomedes I as the capital of Bithynia. Under Rome it became the chief city of the province of Bithynia, and Diocletian made it his main residence and an eastern imperial capital in the late 3rd century. It is the modern Turkish city of İzmit.
