Nicomedes IV

r. c. 94–74 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Nicomedes IV Philopator

Nicomedes IV Philopator was the last king of Bithynia in north-western Anatolia. Twice driven out by Mithridates VI of Pontus, he was restored each time by Rome. On his death in 74 BCE he left his kingdom to the Roman Republic in his will, and the bequest provoked the Third Mithridatic War. Bithynia became a Roman province.
