Rangaku
Rangaku, meaning Dutch learning, was the body of European scientific and technical knowledge studied in Japan through the Dutch trading post at Dejima. During the Tokugawa Shogunate's period of restricted foreign contact, Japanese scholars translated and analysed European works on medicine, astronomy and other fields. This knowledge prepared the intellectual ground for the rapid modernisation of the Meiji period.
