Dejima

Dejima was a small artificial island in the harbour of Nagasaki. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate's policy of restricted foreign contact, it was the sole place where the Dutch were permitted to trade with Japan. It became Japan's main channel for European goods and knowledge, the basis of 'Dutch learning' (rangaku).
