Rastislav of Moravia
Rastislav was ruler of Great Moravia from 846 to 870. Installed by the East Frankish king Louis the German, he soon asserted his independence, building strong fortresses and resisting Frankish attacks. He asked the Byzantine emperor Michael III for missionaries, and Cyril and Methodius arrived in 863 to teach in the Slavic language. Betrayed by his nephew Svatopluk, he was handed to the Franks and blinded.
