Regeneration (Colombia)

1880s–1900 · 19th century

The Regeneration was the political movement led by Rafael Núñez in Colombia from the 1880s that replaced the federal, liberal order of the United States of Colombia with a centralised state. Backed by Conservatives and moderate Liberals, it produced the Constitution of 1886, which created the Republic of Colombia, strengthened the presidency and restored the Catholic Church's role in education. Liberal opposition to its rule led to the Thousand Days' War of 1899–1902.
