Thousand Days' War

1899–1902 · 19th century

The Thousand Days' War was a civil war in Colombia from 1899 to 1902 between the governing Conservatives and the Liberals, which killed perhaps 100,000 people. Much of the final fighting took place on the isthmus of Panama, then a Colombian department, and the war ended with treaties signed in 1902, one of them aboard the American battleship USS Wisconsin. The devastation it left helped make possible Panama's secession in 1903.
