La Violencia

1948–1958 · 20th century

La Violencia was a civil conflict in Colombia between supporters of the Liberal and Conservative parties, usually dated from 1948 to 1958. Sparked by the assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, it spread through the countryside in massacres, guerrilla war and police terror, killing around 200,000 people. It ended with the power-sharing National Front, but some of its armed bands later formed the core of leftist guerrillas such as the FARC.
