Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia

1964–2017 · 20th century · Also known as FARC, FARC-EP

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was a Marxist guerrilla group founded in 1964 by Manuel Marulanda and others from peasant self-defence groups. Increasingly financed by kidnapping and the drug trade, it fought the Colombian state for more than five decades. After a peace agreement signed in 2016 with President Juan Manuel Santos it disarmed and became a political party, though dissident groups fought on.
