Reinsurance Treaty
The Reinsurance Treaty was a secret agreement between the German Empire and Russia, concluded by Bismarck in 1887, in which each promised neutrality in most wars involving the other. After Bismarck's dismissal it was allowed to lapse in 1890. Its lapse unravelled Bismarck's diplomatic system and opened the way to a Franco-Russian alliance.
