Rembrandt

1606–1669 · 17th century · Also known as Rembrandt van Rijn, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher, born in Leiden, who worked in Amsterdam from the early 1630s. He is known for portraits, biblical scenes and a long series of self-portraits, and for his use of light and shadow, as in The Night Watch of 1642. Despite early success he went bankrupt in 1656, and he is regarded as the leading artist of the Dutch Golden Age.
