Robert II de la Marck

c. 1468–1536 · 16th century

Robert II de la Marck was lord of Sedan and duke of Bouillon, known as the Great Boar of the Ardennes. He fortified Sedan and claimed sovereignty, owing allegiance to neither the French king nor the emperor. Switching between France and the Habsburgs, in 1521 he declared war on Charles V, provoking the first war between Charles and Francis I, and lost Bouillon for a time.
