Romance of the Western Chamber

c. 1300 · 14th century · Also known as Xixiang ji, The West Chamber

The Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang ji) is a Chinese love story best known through the zaju drama by Wang Shifu of the Yuan dynasty. It tells of the scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, who meet in a monastery and, helped by the maid Hongniang, defy her mother. Derived from a Tang tale by Yuan Zhen and Dong Jieyuan's Jin version, it became one of the most popular plays in Chinese literature.
