Romanos III Argyros

968–1034 · 11th century · Also known as Romanos III

Romanos III Argyros was Byzantine emperor from 1028 to 1034, a senior aristocrat who came to the throne by marrying Zoe, daughter of Constantine VIII. In 1030 he led an army against the Mirdasid emirate of Aleppo and was heavily defeated near Azaz, though his general George Maniakes later took Edessa. His reign was marked by heavy spending on churches, and he died in his bath in 1034, possibly murdered.
