Royal Proclamation of 1763
The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued by George III after Britain gained France's North American territories in the Treaty of Paris. It created the provinces of Quebec, East Florida and West Florida and reserved the lands west of the Appalachians for Indigenous nations, forbidding settlement there. The restriction angered colonists, and the proclamation remains a basis of Indigenous rights in Canada.
