Rudd Concession

1888 · 19th century

The Rudd Concession was a document signed in October 1888 by the Ndebele king Lobengula, granting exclusive mining rights in his lands to agents of Cecil Rhodes led by Charles Rudd. Lobengula later said he had been deceived about its terms. It was the basis for the royal charter of the British South Africa Company in 1889 and its occupation of Mashonaland.
