Ruthenian Uniate Church
The Ruthenian Uniate Church was formed by the Union of Brest in 1596, when most Orthodox bishops of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth accepted the authority of the pope while keeping the Byzantine rite. It became the church of much of the Ruthenian population of modern Belarus and Ukraine. The Russian Empire abolished it in 1839, while in Austrian Galicia it continued as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
