Sacred Heart
The Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic devotion to the physical heart of Jesus as a symbol of divine love, spread widely from the seventeenth century after the visions of Margaret Mary Alacoque in France. In the nineteenth century it became a symbol of Catholic and conservative politics. In 1873 Gabriel García Moreno consecrated Ecuador to the Sacred Heart, the first nation to be so dedicated.
