Saguia el-Hamra

Saguia el-Hamra is the northern region of Western Sahara, named after a seasonal river that crosses it to the Atlantic near Laayoune. Added to the Spanish possessions by agreements with France between 1900 and 1912, it formed the northern part of Spanish Sahara, with Río de Oro to the south. The Polisario Front, founded in 1973, takes its name partly from Saguia el-Hamra.
