Sami al-Hinnawi

1898–1950 · 20th century

Sami al-Hinnawi was a Syrian army officer who led the second military coup of 1949, overthrowing and executing Husni al-Za'im in August. He restored civilian government but favoured union with Hashemite Iraq, which alarmed other officers, and in December 1949 Adib Shishakli removed him. He went into exile in Lebanon, where he was assassinated in 1950.
