San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico, on a bay on the island's north coast. Spanish settlers moved there from Caparra around 1521, and it grew into a heavily fortified port guarding the routes of the Spanish treasure fleets, with the fortress of El Morro. It remained the seat of Spanish government until the United States took the island in 1898.
