Castillo San Felipe del Morro

1539–1790s · 16th century

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a Spanish citadel on the headland guarding the entrance to San Juan Bay in Puerto Rico. Begun in 1539 and expanded over two and a half centuries into a massive stone fortress, it withstood English and Dutch attacks, though the Earl of Cumberland's forces took it in 1598. It is part of the San Juan National Historic Site and a World Heritage Site.
