Castle Bravo

1954 · 20th century

Castle Bravo was the first American test of a deliverable dry-fuel hydrogen bomb, exploded at Bikini Atoll on 1 March 1954. Its yield of about 15 megatons, far more than predicted, made it the largest nuclear explosion ever carried out by the United States. Radioactive fallout contaminated the inhabited atolls of Rongelap and Utirik and the Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryū Maru, causing an international outcry.
