Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands are two chains of coral atolls in the central Pacific, the Ratak and Ralik chains, home to Marshallese navigators for some two thousand years. They became a German protectorate in 1885, were occupied by Japan in 1914 and by the United States in 1944. After serving as a US nuclear test site, they became independent in free association in 1986.
