Palau

Palau is an island country in the western Pacific, at the western end of the Caroline Islands, made up of about 340 islands. Ruled in turn by Spain, by Germany from 1899 and by Japan from 1914, whose South Seas Government sat at Koror, it saw hard fighting at Peleliu in 1944 and then became part of the US Trust Territory. It became independent in 1994 in free association with the United States.
