Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands

1947 CE – 1994 CE · capital Honolulu; later Guam, Saipan

A United Nations strategic trust territory in Micronesia administered by the United States, scene of nuclear tests, which split into four modern states.

Origins

American forces captured Japan's South Seas Mandate during the Second World War. In 1947 the United Nations placed the Marshall, Caroline and Northern Mariana Islands under American administration as the only strategic trust territory, giving the United States the right to fortify them.

Rule and society

The US Navy governed until 1951, then the Department of the Interior, with headquarters moved to Saipan in 1962. From 1946 to 1958 the United States conducted 67 nuclear tests at Bikini and Enewetak, including the Castle Bravo explosion of 1954, which contaminated Rongelap. Development was neglected until the 1960s. A Congress of Micronesia, created in 1965, became the forum for negotiating the islands' future.

Decline and legacy

The districts chose separate paths: the Northern Mariana Islands became a US commonwealth, while the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia gained independence in free association in 1986. Palau's compact took effect in 1994, ending the trusteeship.
