Congress of Micronesia
The Congress of Micronesia was the elected legislature of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, created in 1965 and first convened at Saipan. It became the forum in which Micronesian leaders negotiated their future political status with the United States. The territory's districts eventually chose separate paths: the Northern Mariana Islands became an American commonwealth, while the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau became self-governing states.
