Micronesia
Micronesia is a region of the western Pacific Ocean made up of thousands of small islands, including the Mariana, Caroline, Marshall and Gilbert Islands and Nauru. Its name, from the Greek for "small islands", came into use in the 19th century. Settled by seafaring peoples over several thousand years, the islands were later divided among colonial powers including Spain, Germany, Japan, Britain and the United States.
