Micipsa

d. 118 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Micipsa was king of Numidia from 148 to 118 BCE, the eldest legitimate son of Masinissa. He first shared power with his brothers Gulussa and Mastanabal and, after their deaths, ruled alone from Cirta, keeping the kingdom a loyal ally of Rome and encouraging Greek and Punic culture. He adopted his nephew Jugurtha and left the kingdom jointly to him and his sons Adherbal and Hiempsal, a settlement that soon collapsed.
