Midas

fl. late 8th century BCE · 8th century BCE · Also known as Mita of Mushki, King Midas

Midas was a king of Phrygia in the late 8th century BCE, ruling from Gordion. Assyrian records call him Mita of Mushki and show him as a rival and later a correspondent of Sargon II. He married a princess of Cyme and was said to be the first foreigner to send an offering to Delphi. Greek tradition says he killed himself when the Cimmerians overran Phrygia, and made him the king with the golden touch.
