Enewetak
Enewetak is a large coral atoll in the Marshall Islands. American forces captured it from Japan in February 1944, and from 1948 to 1958 the United States carried out 43 nuclear tests there, including Ivy Mike in 1952, the first full-scale hydrogen bomb. Its people were moved away and returned only after a partial clean-up in 1980; contaminated soil was sealed under the concrete Runit Dome.
