Rongelap

Also known as Rongelap Atoll

Rongelap is an atoll in the Marshall Islands, east of Bikini. Fallout from the Castle Bravo test of 1 March 1954 fell on its inhabitants, who were evacuated only two days later and suffered radiation sickness and later illnesses. They were returned in 1957, but fears of continuing contamination led them to leave again in 1985, when the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior carried them to Kwajalein Atoll.
