Yapese chiefdoms
Origins
Yap, a cluster of high islands in the western Caroline Islands, was settled over 2,000 years ago. By the time of European contact its villages had been arranged in a strict ranking, with three paramount villages heading rival alliances. Gachpar in the district of Gagil led the network of outer islands, a relationship known as the sawei.
Rule and society
Land, not persons, carried rank on Yap: each estate held a title, and chiefs of high villages commanded the services of low-caste villages. Through the sawei, atolls from Ulithi to Namonuito sent cloth, mats and shell valuables to Gagil, receiving food and protection against typhoons and sorcery in return. Yapese voyagers quarried huge limestone discs, rai, in Palau and carried them home as stone money, still used in ceremonial exchange. Taro swamps and fishing supported the population.
Decline and legacy
A dispute between Spain and Germany over Yap in 1885 was settled by Pope Leo XIII in Spain's favour, and Spanish rule began in 1886. Germany, Japan and the United States followed. Yap is now a state of the Federated States of Micronesia, where chiefly councils keep a constitutional role.
